HOW do I say goodbye to this eventful year? Should I think about all the depressing details – state capture, the petrol price, interest rate hikes, global disasters, crime, the cost of living, the state of our economy? Or should I focus on the many wondrous things in this complex, crazy country of ours? There were loud cheers when Stats SA recently reported that South Africa had achieved GDP growth of 2,2% for the third quarter – meaning the country is officially out of recession. But we’re not out of the woods yet. Overall growth for the year is predicted to come in at less than 1% and things aren’t looking much better for 2019. The World Bank forecasts growth of 1,3% for the coming year, but SA needs an economic growth rate of at least 5% for substantial job creation and development.
