Until recently it didn’t seem mainstream but when people in the office started to notice it in the places they frequented we realised we have to do what we always do: test and explain this new trend for our readers. There’s almost no legislation regarding restrictions on off-road bikes, says Phillip Weyer, owner of the Synergy Racing Academy in Centurion, Gauteng. “There’s no age restriction nor are there any limits on the power levels of bikes for various ages. “The law requires only that off-road bikes – as with quad bikes – may not be ridden on tarred public roads such as national highways. “You don’t need a licence to ride these bikes. OUR country has 10 national botanical gardens, all managed by the South African National Biodiversity Institute (Sanbi). The purpose of these gardens is to propagate and preserve indigenous plants. Collectively the gardens contain thousands of hectares of flora and various fauna, enabling Sanbi to teach the public about preserving the environment. The Karoo Desert National Botanical Garden (founded in 1921) is at the foot of the Hex River Mountain north of Worcester in the Western Cape. The garden spans about 154ha, of which only 11ha is cultivated garden. There are two paths, the Skalie and Grysbokkie, through the uncultivated part of the garden. Feeling drained in the first few weeks of a vegan diet isn’t uncommon, says Sarah Gouws, a registered dietician at Munchwize in Cape Town. “Any drastic change in diet could cause a person to feel slightly different,” she says. Supplement your diet with vitamin B12 which “plays an important role in the nervous system and the formation of red blood cells and is found naturally only in animal products”, she suggests. She also recommends a supplement containing DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), an omega-3 fatty acid found in fish, which is crucial for a healthy brain.
