I WAS driving on the N1 in Cape Town recently – the bit where nobody drives under 60km/h – and couldn’t believe it when I saw a child clambering up to the back window, clearly not strapped in. The road was slick from the weekend’s rain but even if it had been bone-dry it would still be dangerous for a child to be on the back seat of that car without a seatbelt. I don’t know how parents can be so irresponsible. If the car behind them had skidded after braking too hard the chance of that child flying through the windscreen was high.
