On my way to work during recent heavy rains I came to an intersection and just as I was about to cross it I noticed a cardboard box wriggling around on a patch of grass. Despite its neck being so long, like most mammals – including humans – it has the same number of neck vertebrae: seven. Because it’s so tall the giraffe has a complicated blood-circulation system that’s kept going by an enormous 10kg heart (a human heart weighs only about 300g).
