American entrepreneur Josh Golder owned 13 production boats before he built his first custom yacht. The 154-foot (47-meter) King Benji encapsulates everything he wants: crazy adventures, a real connection to the outdoors, and every toy imaginable. It’s also the second-largest vessel that Turkish shipyard Dunya Yachts has built. Marco Bonelli and Marijana Radovic are the essence of a dynamic duo, sharing a complementary vision for family as well as design. From their m2 atelier architecture and design studio in Milan, Italy, the married couple has worked on notable recent projects such as the 213-foot (65-meter) Codecasa Regina d’Italia and the 190-foot (58-meter) Codecasa Kathryn. “The distinctive feature of all m2 atelier projects, on whatever scale and latitude, is our constant effort to reduce the superfluous,” Bonelli says. “This is a selective attitude which abolishes elements of redundancy and semantic overload to achieve a dry, streamlined, minimalist design, summed up in the motto ‘Less is Enough.’” Their studio, founded in 2011, is based in a renovated cookware factory built around a courtyard. Teignbridge Propellers, near the seaside town of Torquay on England’s south coast, has been designing and manufacturing propellers and stern gear for half a century. Having started out serving commercial ships and workboats, Teignbridge also operates at a higher level with military vessels and large yachts. It’s one of few such companies with its own foundry, and its manufacturing takes place in a historic brick building built by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, the great civil and mechanical engineer. Aptly, Brunel also designed the SS Great Britain, the first propeller-driven, iron-hulled ship to cross the Atlantic, in 1845. Today, marine propellers come in every shape and size, but they all convert rotational motion into thrust by producing a pressure difference in the surrounding water. Food accounts for about 75 percent of charter guests’ enjoyment aboard. Perhaps that is a slight exaggeration, but it’s in the ballpark. Patrick Cowley, captain of the 207-foot (63-meter) Feadship Lady Britt, has hosted more than 150 charters, and he concurs. “Many of our clients have been back more than once,” Cowley says. “One couple chartered us a dozen times. Over those years, they built their own 55-meter yacht, but still came back for one last charter after its launch. Could be classical or opera, but just as easily it could be American pop, depending on my mood. What time are you in the galley in the morning?
