Custom yachts bear the DNA of their owners, activated by designers, engineers, naval architects and builders. Some owners take a lighter touch, leaving the project more in the hands of the talent they hire to interpret their visions. Others assume greater degrees of involvement. A new flagship is always a cause for celebration, and Italy’s Ferretti Group did exactly that with its Custom Line 140'. Taking over the top slot in the brand’s semicustom range at just under 400 gross tons, she increases interior volume by more than 30 percent compared to her nearest sibling, the Custom Line 120'. That equates to about 3,200 square feet (300 square meters) of floor space, just on the inside of the yacht. Nainoa Thompson, president of the Polynesian Voyaging Society, is one of the few native Hawaiians since the 14th century to practice wayfinding—the art and science of ancient non-instrument navigation—for long-distance ocean voyaging.
