Boats, as we all know, are getting bigger. A walk around any boat show will confirm that. They’re getting physically longer, beamier, higher volume for sure. But modern yachts also give a much greater impression of spaciousness – even relatively modest new designs have been carefully thought out in terms of natural light and liveability. So it may seem utterly counter-intuitive to limit yourself to a compact, vintage yacht, to strip out modern creature comforts and set off around the world as the Golden Globe skippers are doing (see page 22). While the AC40s are designed as an even platform for teams to test design elements, the British team INEOS Britannia will also be launching its own scaled-down development yacht. It’s likely that other ‘Project X’ type trial yachts will also be unveiled as the Cup teams ramp up their trials and testing phase. As reported by Justin Chisholm of CupInsider.com and confirmed by the British team in a press release, the ‘LEQ12’ yacht, code-named T6, will be launched at their new training base in Palma, Mallorca. The 12th edition of the Route du Rhum – Destination Guadeloupe single-handed transatlantic race, which sets off from St Malo on 6 November, has a record entry of 138 solo skippers. This is the largest ever fleet in the race’s 44-year history, which this autumn finishes in Pointe a Pitre, Guadeloupe. The impressive line up includes no fewer than eight giant multihulls in the Ultim class, and a further eight in the Ocean Fifty multi class. In the hugely competitive IMOCA fleet 37 boats are taking part, many having their first serious competitive outing since launching earlier this year, such as Sam Davies’s Initiatives Coeur. I enjoy skating on thin ice. Editor Helen’s leader in the September issue raised the topic of gender sensitive nautical terminology, which to some might be a subject ripe for discussion. Sparkman and Stephens aficionado Tapio Lehtinen believes his Gaia 36 is the perfect vessel for the rigours of the Golden Globe Race, despite being the oldest yacht in the fleet having been built in 1965. Lehtinen completed the 2018 edition, the first ‘re-running’ of the famous solo non stop race, in 5th place in the same boat, after being hampered by ineffective antifouling that resulted in massive underwater growth. However, a bigger refit than anticipated meant Lehtinen was not able to fully realise his vision for the boat last time. He bought her in 2017 in Italy, but it was only after sailing home to Finland that significant delamination was discovered in the deck. According to Andy Beadsworth, when you’re helming the boat you’re not so much steering as ‘applying load to the tiller’. “Sometimes the boat heels over and the load comes on to the tiller or wheel, but you want to keep going in a straight line. Spithill breaks his SailGP duck Jimmy Spithill and the United States SailGP Team managed to shake their run of disappointing results with a first event win at the French SailGP event in St Tropez. Spithill, a double America’s Cup winner, had faced swingeing criticism after a series of uncharacteristically poor results in SailGP. Australia leads the series overall, with New Zealand rapidly closing the gap. Yacht topics debated The Yacht Racing Forum will take place from 21-22 November in Malta. Early September marked the 45th anniversary of the Cannes Yachting Festival, which was held over six days and involved almost 650 boats on display, 135 of which were making world debuts. The objective of the organisers was to exceed results pre-Covid, which it managed, with 54,000 visitors and 600 exhibitors. Sylvie Ernoult, director of Cannes Yachting Festival, reported that they had had positive feedback from exhibitors. “Since the end of the lockdowns the market is back on track and the order books are full for the next two years. A new Cape Horn ‘Hall of Fame’ has been created, with an honour board in Les Sables d’Olonne, arguably the spiritual home of short-handed around the world sailing. The first 28 inductees were selected by The International Association of Cape Horners (IACH) and presented at a ceremony ahead of the Golden Globe Race start in September 2022. Each of the inductees are famous for their sailing achievements and their connection to the famous Cape, which lies on the southernmost headland of Tierra del Fuego, Chile. Among those sailors selected for the inaugural induction are Captain Willem Schouten and Jacob Le Maire, the first westerners to have their discovery of the Cape recognised. Michael Chapman Pincher, son of the great investigative journalist, left school at 17 to become a stagehand in London’s West End. At 23 in 1974 he quit and went to sea with John Farrell and his sailing companion Carola, both Irish and both on the run from dysfunctional marriages. The first new ‘mini’ America’s Cup class, the AC40, has been launched in New Zealand and took flight on its first sail this September, after some successful tow-testing. Cannes show continued to stamp its authority as THE international in-water show of the year. As you might expect, it involves a hefty amount of glitz, and it was the 50ft to 80ft monohulls and catamarans that stole the majority of the limelight in the Port Canto sail only marina. And while there were dozens of these, many of which we toured and will appear on video on our YouTube channel this autumn, we also noticed an increased presence of smaller yachts. Southampton and Genoa also hosted successful in-water shows this autumn, the former being an excellent showcase of more approachable sized yachts and all forms of watersports, and in particular the gear and equipment needed to enjoy them. Lymington-based superyacht design specialist Malcolm McKeon has unveiled details about this astounding new 75m performance catamaran-cum-floating resort concept. McKeon predicts it will easily be able to sail at 1.5x light true wind speeds and says it would be able to clock over 25 knots when the breeze picks up, yet with a heel angle of less than 5º (although crew may need to be attentive to deck cushions in such conditions). The Golden Globe Race limits competitors to use equipment that is similar to what was available in 1968. Modern chartplotters, GPS and mobile phones are banned. Skippers must navigate using a sextant and paper charts and rely on HF Single Side Band (SSB) radio and barometers for weather information, though they may contact other ships, and this time are allowed weather faxes. The rules on what information may be shared have been clarified, as during the 2018 event organiser Don McIntyre had to adapt the regulations as the race progressed and skippers found inventive ways to access weather data using traditional tools. If a child were to draw a crayon picture of a little boat on a big sea, it might look something like Yann Quenet’s Baluchon. Baluchon is only 13ft 1in (4m long), with one simple sail and a stubby, blunt-nosed hull painted cherry red and ice cream white. Baluchon is no toy, though.
