Just weeks after the fifth and final competitor of 18 entrants finished the 2018 Golden Globe Race, event founder Don McIntyre announced another retro-style race called the Ocean Globe Race. Whereas the Golden Globe Race celebrated 50 years since the original Sunday Times-sponsored event of that name, the 2023 Ocean Globe Race will be in the spirit of the original 1973 fully crewed Whitbread Round the World Race. It follows the same route, is open to the same types of yachts, and covers 27,000 miles over seven months. Hard behind the announcement of a round the world race for Class 40s in June comes another two-handed circumnavigation. The Race Around is the idea of British and New Zealand duo Sam Holliday and Hugh Piggin. Former America’s Cup contenders put on a nostalgic show at the Ida Lewis Yacht Club in Newport, Rhode Island, in July this year with the largest ever gathering of 12 Metre yachts in the US for their 2019 World Championships. Some 21 of the much-loved designs competed, including famous names such as Courageous and Kiwi Magic. The oldest yacht was the 90-year-old Onawa (US-6), built in 1928, while the most recent were built in the 1980s. Racing was held in five divisions, with Challenge XIII (KA-10) winning the hotly contested modern division, Legacy (KZ-5) winning the grand prix fleet, Columbia (US-16) taking the traditional class, Nyala (US-12) the vintage fleet and America II (US-42) the spirit division. In a dramatic mid-ocean rescue in June, American sailor Roy Disney and his crew on the 68ft sled Pyewacket saved the entire crew from John Sangmeister’s Santa Cruz 70 OEX after OEX began taking on water. Both crews were taking part in the 50th edition of the Transpac. All nine crewmembers of OEX were recovered safely and returned to Long Beach, California. Sangmeister explained that OEX was close-reaching at around 14-17 knots at 0230 when the crew heard a loud bang and the helmsman lost steering. “We realised very quickly that we had no steering whatsoever, and that we were taking on water,” he explained. Summery but calm conditions gave the 1,253 crews in the Round the Island Race a tortuously slow circuit of the Isle of Wight in June – so slow, in fact, that only 275 boats completed the course. The race, though run by the Island Sailing Club this year without a title sponsor, continues to be one of the largest examples of mass participation in sailing and a reliably colourful spectacle. The race is often won overall on handicap by one of the smallest yachts, and this year was no exception. Willy Ker, who has died at the age of 94, was by any measure an extraordinary sailor, writes Jessie Rogers. Over the course of 40 years he adventured around the world in his beloved Contessa 32, Assent (see our feature on page 40), and his infectious enthusiasm for discovering places that were “new and exciting” and capacity for coping with adversity were legendary in cruising circles. Ker continued sailing, often solo to Greenland and Baffin Bay, well into his eighties. Born in 1924, Ker served with the Royal Engineers in Burma during World War II before being posted to Kiel, where he learned to sail on boats requisitioned by the British at the end of the war. Anotable trend in recent years has been the rise in popularity of ‘boats in a bag’. These are typically stand up paddleboards (SUPs), kayaks and sailing dinghies that can be easily packed away and kept in a small apartment – perfect for today’s generation of younger adults who lack the time to use a larger vessel and are unlikely to have a drive or front garden in which a trailer-sailer could be kept. These neatly packaged craft also make great watersports toys on yachts – their ease of assembly, relatively light weight and compact stowed dimensions are ideal for the purpose.
