Glassy calms
Starting the engine as soon as the wind drops off robs the passage of a lot of pleasure, in my opinion. Dealing with calms, is just as much part of sailing as barrelling down the waves.
To illustrate I would like to share the following experience: in 1988 I sailed with the Australian yacht Sundancer from Sydney to the UK. Sundancer’s engine was rather useless, so we took the propeller off before we left Sydney, to reduce drag.
