New guidelines, supported by the RYA, RNLI and the Coastguard, have been launched to help prevent accidents at sea. Emily’s Code is named after 14-yearold Emily Gardner, who died when the speedboat she was in capsized and her buoyancy aid caught on a cleat, trapping her under water.
The code aims to raise awareness of key safety messages for owners and users of small boats, as well as those less familiar with going to sea.
The code’s ten key messages are: wear a stuitable lifejacket or buoyancy aid, service your equipment, get trained, make a plan, know your limits, carry distress signals, use the kill cord, know your boat, have a radio, and check the weather.
