This past month, we have added over 300 new coin issues to NumisMaster. Due to the discovery of Roman coins and other artifacts in China, there is physical evidence that the two empires traded via the Silk Road. Surviving records documenting emissaries between the two countries exist, and Roman coins, Indian jewelry, ceramics, and glass beads have been found as far east as the Japanese archipelago. There is similar archaeological evidence that suggests Southeast Asia was trading as far west as what is today Bangladesh at about the same time. Archaeological evidence, including coins, Roman glassware, Indian jewelry, and Persian, Southwest Asian, and Chinese ceramics, supports this claim. Little study has been conducted on Southeast Asian trade with Bangladesh in comparison to the extensive research on the Roman-Chinese connection. Indian coins have joined a long list of items subject to import restrictions that appears to be getting longer through recently implemented or extended Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). The current list also includes Algeria, Bulgaria, China, Cyprus, Egypt, Greece, Iraq, Italy, Jordan, Libya, Morocco, Syria, and Yemen. Coins being imported to the United States from any of these nations require their importation to be proved to have been made before specific dates through satisfactory evidence. The Antiquities Coalition (AC) is a Washington-based nongovernmental organization with a stated goal of stopping the looting and trafficking of antiquities, which includes coins. As Chang Tso-Lin conquered and ruled northeastern China in the 1920s and became Generalissimo of the Military Government of the Republic of China in 1927, the Tientsin Mint made commemorative coins bearing the portrait of the warlord. These issues were exquisitely crafted in a three-year series---it ended after Tso-Lin’s assassination in 1928---using the highest-level of minting techniques of the time in China, showcasing well-made features and lifelike portraiture. A 1926 coin from this series has reached the collection of Champion Macau Auction and will go on sale in the company’s November 29 auction. Here’s a specialty to consider collecting: starter sets of euro coins. These kits are introduced by countries that are entering the eurozone and adopting the euro as currency. All euro starter sets come packed in a sealed plastic sachet. The latest country to offer starter sets of euro coins is Bulgaria. The Balkan nation will replace its lev-denominated currency with the euro at a fixed exchange rate of 1.95583 leva to the euro, effective January 1, 2026. According to Postbank, the fifth-largest bank in the country, starter packs of Bulgarian euro coins are planned to be sold at their euro value equivalent prior to the official changeover, which is scheduled to begin in December. The Ottoman sultans were not tyrannical rulers. They had to contend with a political elite. For example, the Janissaries had had their semi-autonomous fingers in the government pie for centuries. They had become an organization by the end of the 18th century, dedicated to preserving their own privileges above all else. Successive sultans considered eliminating them but couldn't quite figure out how. The Ottoman Empire got itself a new sultan on April 7, 1789, with Selim III, who came to the throne at the age of 27. His father, Mustafa III, had named him as successor, but when he died in 1774, his brother Abdul Hamid II was installed by a palace faction and proceeded to rule for 15 years. Since the onset of Western colonization, Indigenous persons have been depicted on coin currency. Created by non-Native people, much of this imagery was not consensual and Native, Aboriginal, and other Indigenous peoples were presented in the abstract visually and culturally. However, as Indigenous rights movements across the globe have grown in awareness and visibility, artistry on coins made by or consulted with related artists, organizations, and communities has increased. For sale was the Crown Coin, a commemorative issue crafted for Queen Elizabeth II, that was available for bid in person at Stanley Gibbons Baldwin’s London flagship and through its digital bidding platform. What would garner a global auction dedicated to only one coin? The Crown Coin is considered one of the world’s most valuable issues and is often compared to the iconic 1,000 tola gold mohur of Mughal Emperor Jahangir in terms of prestige. A gold quarter-drachma of Queen Berenice II of Egypt (c. 269-221 B.C.), recently discovered in August 2025 by the Israel Antiquities Authority in a parking lot in the Jerusalem National Park, raises the question of Jerusalem’s significance between the 586 B.C. destruction of the city and its restoration during what is known as the Second Temple period. The .983 fine gold quarter drachma coin features the diademed and veiled bust of Berenice II Euergetes facing right and wearing a necklace on the obverse. Berenice II ruled as queen regnant of Cyrenaica from 258 to 248 B.C. and as queen of Ptolemaic Egypt between 246 and 222 B.C. Collectors familiar with coins issued during the ancient Judaic revolts against Rome will attest to the existence of two unsuccessful insurrections that have been recorded numismatically. Both are relatively well-known due to the coins struck during these conflicts. These insurrections are the First Jewish-Roman War, which took place from A.D. 66 to 73, and the Bar Kokhba Revolt, which occurred from 132 to 136. In fact, there were numerous unsuccessful insurrections throughout the Roman occupation of Judaea. Emergency issue coins or coins celebrating the Roman victories were not issued during many of these conflicts. These events may be known to historians, but due to a lack of numismatic evidence, they are unknown to collectors of ancient coins. Although Emperor Nicholas I had managed to halt the curse of paper money in 1839, it returned with a vengeance in 1854, and the marketplace was once more held prisoner by such currency. Nicholas I then died in early 1855 and was succeeded by his eldest son, Alexander II (1855–1881). The new czar faced many problems, not the least of which was the increasingly disastrous state of the economy. The massive issues of “assignats” or paper money unhinged the close cooperation between silver and gold, and the citizen could no longer exchange coins of the two metals at par value. Today, 20 European countries share the euro, a single currency of coins and bank notes that entered circulation in 2002. However, the concept of having an economic and monetary union in Europe was not new; much older systems had already been tested during the nineteenth century. Initial attempts to achieve a supranational monetary union had been made during Napoleon’s First French Empire (1808–1814), based on a bimetallic franc that circulated at par with coins from conquered territories (lira and frank). Likewise, the “Münzverein,” in English referred to as the German Monetary Union, had established a common thaler circulating in the northern territories (1838–1871). Last year, Numismatic News teamed up with a tour agency and planned a trip for coin enthusiasts. While there was much discussion behind the scenes on where to go and what to do there, we finally settled on visiting London and parts of Wales. This year, we were able to make the trip happen.
