There are a lot of concerns regarding the future of the environment and if the planet may be warming due to human activities. Coins are metal objects, which means by their very composition their use could be unfriendly to the earth’s ecology. The average person is unlikely to consider coins as a threat to the environment, but the Central Bank of the Republic of China (Taiwan) has other thoughts on the matter. On December 5 the CBRC released a statement reading, “When people don’t use their coins and leave them at home, the central bank then has to produce more to meet demand, which raises the bank’s costs and also produces more carbon emissions.” The bank statement continues, “One simple thing that people can do to ‘help protect the ecosystem’…

An extremely rare British coin led the way in an auction that featured over 200 vintage rarities including 11 that realized prices over $100,000. Künker Münzauktionen und Goldhandel’s Auction 400 was held Feb. 1, 2024. The top lot was one of the most desirable coins in British numismatics: an 1820 Gold Pattern 5 Sovereign. Graded NGC PF 64★ Cameo (lot 497), this example realized €552,000 (about $597,000), more than triple its pre-auction estimate of € 150,000. The obverse shows King George III, who reigned from 1760 to 1820, while the reverse shows Benedetto Pistrucci’s masterful Saint George and the Dragon, which is still in use today. After the comeback of the World Money Fair, one of the largest coin fairs globally, in 2023 following a several-year hiatus due to COVID, anticipation was high for this year's fair in Berlin. Coin collectors from around the world, representatives from mints, and dealers gathered in Berlin. Thousands of visitors crowded the halls of the Berlin Estrel Hotel on Feb. 2, 2024, forming long lines shortly after the opening. The return of the World Money Fair didn't automatically guarantee a major success after the fair had to be canceled for three years due to the pandemic. The annual Trial of the Pyx has been conducted for centuries. Despite all the pomp associated with the trial its true function is to assay the nation’s coinage primarily to ensure the purity of precious metal coins is correct. According to The Goldsmiths’ Company Assay Office, “The purpose of the annual trial is to check that United Kingdom coins produced at The Royal Mint are within the statutory limits for metallic composition, weight, and size.” The GCAO continued, “The benchmark against which the coins are tested is called a Trial Plate. Coins are historically known to have been cut to make small change. The term “pieces of eight” is a reference to dividing a Spanish colonial American silver 8-reale coin into pieces to make smaller denominations. A recent discovery appears to be evidence that coins were occasionally cut into pieces to make smaller denominations as far back as the dawn of the use of coins as money. The silver coin found at an Israel Antiquities Authority excavation in the Judean Hills has a square stamp on the obverse, with a punch mark on the reverse. A doubloon was a 2- or double escudo Spanish gold coin. Spain and its New World colonies minted half, 1-, 2-, 4-, and 8-escudo gold coins. A doubloon was also dubbed a pistol in English. A Spanish doubloon was valued at about $2. The 1787 Brasher “doubloon” was about the weight of an 8-escudo coin and would have been valued at about $16.
