You may be asking yourself, who? The name Esunertos may not ring a bell with historians or numismatists, but nevertheless, it appears this may have been a usurper to Atrebate tribal ruler Commius during the late first century B.C. in Celtic Britain. Without perhaps as much fanfare as it deserves, a gold coin on which the name Esunertos appears was auctioned on September 28 by Spink in Great Britain. Sources indicate Esunertos’s name appears as IISVNIIRTOS on the few gold and silver coins known on which he is named. Ashmolean Museum Celtic Coin Index archaeologist Dr. John Sills examined the recently discovered coin prior to it being offered for sale. There are times in politics when progressives win and there are times when conservatives win. The same can be true of numismatic politics. This time the conservative win comes as somewhat of a surprise. In early November the Isle of Man announced it was rolling back an earlier decision to begin withdrawing 1-, 2-, and 5-pence coins, rounding cash transactions to the nearest 10 pence. Feedback from the general public indicates the idea is not acceptable. The seven-week survey included 1,050 residents, retailers, business leaders, and local authorities. According to the survey results, when asked if the three coin denominations “no longer have any real purchasing power” 45 percent said yes, however, 55 percent said no. The reason for the burial has yet to be determined, but more than 100,000 ancient Chinese coins were recently discovered near excavations for the construction of a new factory in Maebashi City, Japan. The discovery was made at the Sosha Village East 03 archaeological site. The one-kilometer area being examined by archaeologists includes Shosha burial mounds, the ruins of the San’o Temple, and the Ueno Kokubunji Temple. It appears the region was a center of activity between the late Kofun (300-538 A.D.) and the Ritsuryo (603-937) periods. Great Britain has Treasure Trove laws that are strictly enforced. Anyone who discovers gold or silver objects more than 300 years old in England, Northern Ireland, or Wales is required to report the find under the Treasure Act 1996. The Treasure Act 1996 does not apply on the Isle of Man or in Scotland. Finds on the IOM or in Scotland must be reported to the regional finds liaison officer. According to the Treasure Act, potential treasure must be reported to the coroner in the district of the find within 14 days of the find.
