The Royal Mint has completed its popular Winnie the Pooh and Friends coin collection, inspired by Disney, with the launch of a collectible 50 pence featuring Pooh and some of his closest friends. The final coin in the treasured nine-coin collection, the new 50p features a woodland scene with the loveable bear and his Hundred Acre Wood friends Tiger, Eeyore, and Piglet. The design is inspired by the original illustrations of E. H. Shepard and has been brought to life using British craftsmanship and innovative color printing technology at The Royal Mint. ♦Reader William Davis writes: “Often I see it written ‘reale’ such as in your May 2022 Clinic article, where 8 reale was mentioned twice. This is a common error that I see in the numismatic world regarding the name of the Mexican/Spanish ‘real’ currency. The currency was called the ‘real’ (singular) and ‘reales’ (plural) in the Spanish language. I believe the problem occurs thinking, as in English, the ‘s’ is what makes it plural, so dropping the ‘s’ makes it singular. However, this is not the case with ‘real.’ We also have a similar situation in English where ‘es’ is added for plural rather than ‘s.’ So, the coin should be called an 8-real coin. Pobjoy Mint has released a brand new £2 coin series to commemorate 200 years since the death of British Astronomer Sir William Herschel. Sir William Frederick Herschel was a German-born British astronomer who emigrated from Germany to Great Britain at the age of 19. Herschel constructed the first large telescope in 1774, after which he spent nine years carrying out sky surveys to investigate double stars. While making observations, he made note of a new object which, after weeks of verification, was confirmed as a new planet which was given the name Uranus, after the Greek god of the sky.
