Run by a religious figure, the 2,400-or-so children live in a nightmarish environment, where the smell of human waste and urine fill the air. There was no food, water, or bathrooms in sight. The sounds of coughing were abundant, and many of these shoeless, uneducated children recoiled when I tried to shake their hands or touch them.
