You may have done a double take in the canned-fish aisle. Riding the wave of the pseudo-meat trend, a number of food brands, such as Gardein, Quorn, and Good Catch Foods, have launched vegan alternatives to your fave seafood: plant-based fish sticks, raw tuna, shrimp, canned tuna, and even fish sauce—uh-huh, really. “These fish alternatives give vegans and vegetarians more choices,” says Robin Foroutan, RDN, especially when it comes to easy sources of omega-3s and protein (you’ll score 5 to 15 grams of protein, depending on the product). Foroutan’s advice if you’re in the market for alterna-tuna: Watch for super-high levels of sodium, generally common in processed foods, and check the ingredients carefully.
