When I turned 40, in October 2017, the obvious questions about how I planned to celebrate came up. But having a party wasn’t an option, as other than my partner, children and our extended family, I had nobody else I wanted to invite.
I haven’t always been without friends. When I was a child, I had plenty of school mates, but when I was 16, I moved away from Skelmersdale to Grantham, and I lost touch with a lot of people.
