THE STORY SO FAR
Somerset, winter 1908. Dorcas Yewdall’s brothers, Caleb, a coal miner, and Joe, a carting boy at the pit, are on strike over the carting boys’ pay. Other strikers, desperate for money, have returned to work. Trouble flares between the two groups and police arrive from the other side of the county to keep order. When striking miners march on the home of mine owner Hector Kelsey, the police intervene and, in the scuffle, a young constable, Albert, is struck by a stone. Out of sight, Dorcas tends to him, and they seem to share a connection. Next day, Dorcas is harassed by Hector Kelsey’s son, Edwin, who has already propositioned her.
