New drug for schizophrenia Xanomeline/trospium chloride, the first new schizophrenia treatment in more than 50 years, has been approved in the USA but not yet in the UK. Existing antipsychotic treatments, which block brain dopamine receptors, treat hallucinations and delusions but are ineffective against anhedonia and cognitive impairment. The new drug is effective against all symptoms with a better side-effect profile. It’s the first treatment exclusively targeting cholinergic neurotransmitters, which affect many functions, including learning, memory, digestion and movement.
