Cancer types affecting the eyes include melanoma, squamous cell carcinoma, lymphoma, retinoblastoma (a childhood cancer) and secondary spread from surrounding tissues or other cancer such as lungs or breasts. Melanoma is the commonest, especially in the over-50s. Eye cancer doesn’t always cause symptoms, and is sometimes found only during routine eye tests.
‘It’s sometimes found in routine eye tests’ Symptoms include shadows, flashes, wiggly lines or blurring, plus enlarging dark patch or bump on the conjunctiva, visual loss, bulging eye, eyelid lump, persistent irritation, and, rarely, pain around the eye.
