You would have to be extremely lucky to spot a hazel dormouse in the wild, as they are nocturnal and have suffered a serious decline in population since 1995. Back in 2013, the People’s Trust for Endangered Species began to monitor a hazel wood, not far from my home, having discovered a dormouse-nibbled hazelnut. Fifty locked nesting boxes were subsequently installed, to provide a safe habitat for them.
