"In the 1970s, we had a lot of family holidays in and around Mousehole in Cornwall. We got to know The Ship Inn on the harbourside well, occasionally ate at the now long-gone Lobster Pot restaurant overlooking the water for a special treat, and sometimes walked out to the Penlee RNLI lifeboat station on a nearby headland. Later, in December 1981, in an act of extraordinary heroism, eight local men (including the landlord of The Ship) volunteered to launch that lifeboat into a hurricane, to try and rescue the crew of a sinking ship. For 200 years, the RNLI – the Royal National Lifeboat Institution – has been saving lives at sea. Funded entirely by donations, and with lifeboats crewed by trained volunteers, the RNLI is available 24/7. In the 19th century, there were around 1,800 shipwrecks around the UK every year. Living in Douglas on the Isle of Man, Sir William Hillary saw the treacherous nature of the sea and was inspired to help. Why can’t I get a GP appointment? Q I’ve been struggling with my GP practice as they keep giving me appointments with a physician associate. I know they’re trained but they’re not doctors and they can’t know as much. My GP says he will assess me yearly and the associate will refer me if I have any issues, and that this is the best course of action. But I wonder for whom it’s really best?Lilian, Bedford A Physician associates are well-trained but your GP is ultimately responsible for you as a patient, so he will be supervising them and will intervene if there’s anything of concern.
