Dancing through life Sadly, while I can jiggle around plausibly to rock and pop music without making too much of a fool of myself, I’ve never been able to dance in the way people dance on Strictly. It’s linked to faulty genes, such as the BRCA genes or those affected in Lynch syndrome, which increase the risk of ovarian, breast and bowel cancers. Radiotherapy treatment for a previous cancer also is a risk factor, as are having endometriosis or diabetes. Early puberty, late menopause, never having been pregnant or used hormonal contraception, being overweight or a smoker all increase your risk. Symptoms may not be noticed initially as the ovaries have room in the abdomen to grow unnoticed initially, so the cancer may be diagnosed late. Letter of the week An unexpected discovery During a recent trip to the Cotswolds, my husband and I visited Avebury Manor, a National Trust property. Craftspeople, historians, designers and artisans worked very hard to restore the property to reflect five key periods in the house’s history. To my great surprise, one of the rooms included an original first issue of Woman’s Weekly, looking very different from today’s magazine. Visitors are allowed to handle the artefacts and sit in the chairs, so I was able to have a relaxing read of a 1911 magazine and compare its content to that of its 21st-century counterpart.
