The challenge of change So much about society has changed in my lifetime, it’s dizzying. Some of what my own parents accepted as normality now seems antediluvian to younger generations. For example, when I was born, male homosexuality was still illegal, yet my children find that barely believable. As I have occasionally mentioned before, we keep chickens at the bottom of our garden. Or, to be strictly accurate, we keep hens. We did have a boy chicken a few years ago, but when he started to crow in a husky teenage breaking voice sort of a way, we gave him to a friend who lives in the middle of nowhere.
