My earliest memory of Les Dawson is watching him on TV in the living room at home in Holborn Hill in Ormskirk when I was seven or eight, and finding him so joyfully hilarious. It was the words I noticed. It was so beautifully, unfoldingly, lugubriously descriptive. And the punchline would hit you like a custard pie in the face. He was unique. SHORTBREAD FINGERS The addition of semolina to your shortcake will add a lovely crunchy texture. MAKES 16 ✣ 250g unsalted butter, softened ✣ 125g caster sugar ✣ 250g plain flour ✣ 125g semolina You will need: ✣20cm square tin, base lined with baking paper 1 Beat the butter and sugar until smooth. Letter of the week DOLLS FOR ALL While clearing out some cupboards, I found this issue of Woman’s Weekly, from 1976. From that pattern, I made ‘Charlie Boy’ for my then three-year-old daughter. Afterwards, I had requests from family and friends, as presents for children, even for adults themselves. I had a production line of dolls’ parts!
