I love this time of year, as whatever the weather is doing – and we do often get late cold snaps in this country, like the Beast from the East – nevertheless, the spring flowers are bursting up though the ground, the first blossoms and new leaves are appearing on the trees and shrubs, and everywhere has the promise of warmer and sunnier days to come. For gardeners, it’s twice as exciting when the growing season arrives, and we all start dreaming about what we’re going to plant, prune or rejig. Animal farm My three-year-old granddaughter Annalise looked very apprehensive when invited to milk a cow at a children’s petting farm recently. But she was all right once she discovered that it was only a life-sized model! Kathleen Barker, 1945 I married my husband Cliff in a satin dress bought from a friend. It had short sleeves so my mother made them longer using fabric from her own lace wedding dress. She also bought a large piece of net for my veil and embroidered a beautiful pattern on the corners.
