Leading up to Lent For the past few years, I have given up sugary foods for Lent. It’s not a great hardship, is undoubtedly good for my health, and I’m old-fashioned enough to believe that some sort of periodic fasting, even in the very limited way I do it, is possibly good for the soul too. CHICKEN AND MANGETOUT FRIED RICE Keeping a few packs of microwavable rice and a bottle of soy sauce in your cupboard is a great start to making a speedy supper. SERVES 4 ✣200g pouch cooked basmati rice ✣2tbsp sunflower oil ✣2 red onions, finely sliced ✣400g (14oz) chicken breast fillets, cubed ✣8 spring onions, trimmed and sliced ✣200g (7oz) mangetout ✣2tbsp soy sauce ✣Zest and juice of 1 lemon ✣ 1tbsp honey ✣4tbsp chopped fresh coriander 1 Microwave the rice, according to the pack instructions, and set aside. Ingrowing toenail (onychocryptosis) is common, causing pain, difficulty walking and infection. A sharp piece of nail grows into the overlapping nail fold, usually affecting the big toe on one or both sides of the nail. It occurs more in males aged 15-40, and sometimes older women, and is becoming more common. A mix of factors may be responsible, such as poorly fitting shoes, improperly trimmed nails, tight socks, excessive sweating, obesity, soft-tissue abnormalities and inherent nail deformity. A nail spike created by improper nail trimming of the lateral nail edge may injure the soft tissue, allowing bacteria and fungi in to cause infection. Bright beauties There’s a huge choice of summer-flowering bulbs on offer, and now’s the time to plan what you need to bring a splash of exciting colour to the garden, patio or balcony. As well as bulbs (such as lilies), we’re talking corms (freesias), rhizomes (agapanthus) and tubers (begonias). Hardy bulbs, like lilies, can be planted out now but others are tender, so pot them up and keep indoors (a sunny porch is fine) until frosts are well and truly over. Perfumed partners Lilies and freesias will make a patio as fragrant as a perfume counter.
