Also called age-related macular degeneration (AMD), macular degeneration is a common condition affecting the central visual field of one or both eyes, usually in people in their 50s and 60s. The exact cause is unknown, but is linked to smoking, high blood pressure, being overweight and having a family history of AMD. AMD affects the centre of your vision, not the peripheral vision, and doesn’t usually cause total blindness, but makes everyday activities like reading, watching television and recognising faces difficult. There are two types – Dry AMD and Wet AMD. Without treatment, deterioration is gradual, and vision worsens over several years in Dry AMD, or quickly over a few weeks or months with Wet AMD. A Christmas camper In 2018, my husband Roy and I decided to make Christmas a camper van adventure with our daughters Lydia and Nicole.
