A warm welcome Hot-water bottles have always been popular in our family; there’s something indefinably cosy and comforting about a warm companion to cuddle up with in bed. Our two boys had them inside cuddly toy covers when they were little, and my now grown-up daughter still uses her polar bear hot-water bottle cover to this day! We all of us like to sleep in a bedroom with an open window for fresh air, and as the nights get colder, someone putting the kettle on late in the evening to fill a bottle becomes increasingly common. In my early 20s, I joined the Army Air Corps. I did four-and-a-half years regular service, and served in Bosnia, then joined the Army reserves for another two-and-a-half years. HYACINTH’S BOUQUET Make a scented table centrepiece with prepared hyacinth bulbs, primed to flower in eight to nine weeks. Plant in a compost-filled bowl or use bulb vases filled with water to just beneath the bulb, but not touching. Cover and leave in a cool place for around six weeks until shoots appear. When these reach about 5cm, move the bulbs to a bright windowsill. PERFECT PUMPKINS If you’ve grown pumpkins and squash, be sure to harvest them before the frosts arrive.
