Messing about in boats After my A levels, longer ago than I care to remember, I took off on a canal holiday with school friends, while waiting for our results. The sun shone as we floated across England, passing through Birmingham, Nottingham and many other towns plus quietly beautiful countryside in-between. We even swam in the River Trent – not advisable in those days – and spent many an evening in waterside inns. Perhaps it’s the knowledge that most of those pubs are still closed, the towns quiet, and the waterways probably empty, which makes me desperate to do it again as everything reopens. Hyperthyroidism, or overactive thyroid, occurs when the thyroid gland produces too much thyroid hormone, causing unpleasant and potentially serious problems. Thyroid hormones control your metabolism, affecting heart rate and body temperature. Hyperthyroidism is about 10 times more common in women than men, and typically occurs between 20-40 years of age. The cause isn’t always clear. Graves’ disease is the underlying problem in 75% of cases – it’s an autoimmune condition where your immune system mistakenly sees the cells as ‘foreign’, and attacks and damages the thyroid, making it overreact. Alternatively, nodular lumps of extra thyroid tissue can produce thyroid hormones, causing levels to be too high, although it’s not always known why these grow. A US geographical analysis shows higher hospital admissions for Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s in areas of high airborne fine particulate matter concentrations. Another study suggests noise is neurotoxic too. Some 5,000 over-65s underwent regular cognition tests – those living in high daytime noise levels areas scored lower. The important thing to remember is we all need between seven and nine hours’ sleep so, if you’re working late, you need to sleep later in the morning.
