Time for a cuppa? My father never drank hot drinks, so neither tea nor coffee held any interest for him; my eldest son has clearly inherited that same gene. My mum, however, was a constant drinker of both as the day progressed, switching between the two in a comforting well-trod pattern. If she couldn’t sleep at night, she would habitually get up and make herself a cup of tea. Bearing in mind the caffeine in tea, I’m not sure doctors would advise that, but it seemed to work for her. BAKED EGGS WITH SALMON Start your day with this grownup version of egg and soldiers. More and more we’re hearing the term ‘sleep divorce’ to describe people who are sleeping in separate rooms. Sometimes it’s caused by shift patterns, or sleep disorders such as undiagnosed sleep apnoea, where the choking noise made by the sufferer keeps their partner awake, or when someone in a relationship is living with the menopause and the presence of their partner makes things like hot flushes worse. There’s nothing wrong with sleeping apart if you’re both happy with the arrangement. But if it’s an issue, try a bigger bed or separate duvets to help temperature regulation. More than 70 out of 100 UK lung cancer cases are caused by smoking. Other risks include a family history of lung cancer and treatments for other cancer types. A There are different types of urinary incontinence. Stress incontinence – when coughing, sneezing, laughing or exercising – is the most common, especially in women who have had difficult deliveries. Urge incontinence or ‘overactive bladder’ is where you suddenly need to go in the day or at night. Overflow incontinence is where there’s no obvious cause – it may be positional or dribbling continues after peeing. Bladder training and pelvic-floor muscle training help, either supervised by a specialist nurse or physio, or done at home.
