APRP is platelet-rich plasma, a new injectable treatment for a variety of problems, mostly musculoskeletal injuries or disease, especially used by sportsmen. PRP may also be useful in helping wounds heal after surgery, and possibly for hair loss and wrinkle management. The thalassaemias are a relatively common but complex group of inherited blood disorders where, due to defective genes, there is a decreased or even absent production of one of the two polypeptide chains (alpha or beta) that form the normal adult human haemoglobin molecule – the oxygen-carrying part of red blood cells. The beta defects give rise to beta thalassaemia, while mutations of the alpha gene cause alpha thalassaemia. There are more than 300 variations and the clinical severity varies enormously. The disease is referred to as thalassaemia major, intermedia and minor, depending on disease severity. RHUBARB SYLLABUB Rhubarb and ginger are almost as perfect a combination as rhubarb and custard. These beautiful syllabubs are delicious and incredibly easy to make. SUNNY DELIGHT Also known as the Easter flower, the pasque flower (Pulsatilla vulgaris) is one of the earliest perennials to bloom – traditionally on Good Friday but, in reality, any time in April. Home-grown fertiliser Russian comfrey is a fantastically useful plant to have in your garden or allotment. Boost your health by eating enough PROTEIN There’s a lot of information about nutrition but there are simple rules to follow.
