Built to host a king, the chateau of Vaux-le-Vicomte near Paris was commissioned by Nicolas Fouquet, finance minister to the young Louis XIV. Just an hour by train and shuttle bus from Paris Gare de l’Est station, this spectacular 17th-century property is the perfect focus for a festive short break.
This year’s Christmas extravaganza, from 23 November to 5 January, sees the chateau, gardens and courtyards decked out in 1,001 colours. Expect 170 Christmas trees, 4,000m of luminous garlands, 10,000 decorations, a tree decorated all in chocolate, and a red Christmas table laid with Villeroy & Boch china, as well as the opulent King’s bedroom adorned in rich greens.
