The worst thing someone can put on an invitation is to wear smart casual. There is no such thing – there’s either smart or there’s casual. I want to live in a time when gentlemen walk out like Fred Astaire in Easter Parade. The men were just dressed so beautifully. I was diagnosed with breast cancer in April 2018 and started treatment within four weeks. It was such a shock – an impossible thing to process. I had regular bouts of chemo and lost my hair. I used to do a lot of yoga but stopped during the treatment. I really missed it though. So, when I read about classes offered by the charity Breast Cancer Haven in one of the leaflets they’d given me at hospital, I gave them a call. At my assessment they offered me 10 sessions of ‘therapies’, things like reiki, massage and counselling – all based on the psychological and emotional side of having cancer. Pat Smith, 71, is the founder of environmental group Final Straw Cornwall, a campaign to make Cornwall plastic straw-free (finalstrawcornwall.co.uk). Back in March 2017, I saw an educational film called A Plastic Ocean , which shocked me deeply. Until that point I had no idea how big a problem plastic pollution was.
