Lots of us get into gardening rather more by accident than design – perhaps starting off small with a window box to brighten up a flat, before moving to somewhere with a garden and wondering what on earth to do with it. I was like that, but because gardening’s even more addictive than nicotine (though actually good for you), each year that goes by sees me just a little bit more skilful. However, as with many growers, I’m still not that confident about propagating – creating new plants by taking a cutting from an existing one. Rice pudding with fruit compote We like Chambord black raspberry liqueur to add a kick to summer fruit recipes. SERVES 4 ✿ 600ml (1 pint) full-fat milk ✿ 1 vanilla pod, split lengthways, seeds scraped out ✿ 60g (2oz) short-grain pudding rice ✿ 2tbsp caster sugar For the compote: ✿ 300g (10oz) strawberries, whole or halved ✿ 2tbsp caster sugar ✿ 1-2tbsp raspberry liqueur You will need: ✿ 4 ramekins or similar 1 For the rice, heat the milk, vanilla pod and seeds, rice and sugar gently in a large, heavy-based saucepan. Many herbaceous perennials, such as Oriental poppies, phlox, bergenia and daylilies, are easy to propagated by taking root cuttings during autumn or early winter. ✿ To get to the roots it’s best to dig up an entire clump. ✿ Using a sharp knife, cut off some of the roots and chop them into 2-4cm pieces with a horizontal cut at the top and a sloping cut at the lower end. ✿ Insert pencil-thick cuttings vertically in a pot with the horizontal cut uppermost. ✿ Lay thinner cuttings flat on a tray of compost. ✿ Place in a cold frame and you should see signs of growth in spring. Missing connection Q I have a tight connection between LA and a flight to Hawaii on a different airline. Am I covered if I miss it? Spotted a beautiful plant in a friend or neighbour’s garden? Well, now’s the time to ask them if you can take a semi-ripe cutting and propagate it for your own garden. From now through to mid-autumn many perennials can be propagated from their soft tips, including popular bedding plants like argyranthemums, osteospermums and pelargoniums. You can also take semi-hardwood cuttings from shrubs that are starting to mature and producing growth between the softwood and woody stage, such as lavatera, perovskia, fuchsias and hydrangeas. It was about two years ago that I noticed how rubbish I was feeling. My mood was low, I felt run-down and stressed all the time.
