When I left college, I worked for a while doing 12-hour shifts on a production line at the Colman’s factory in Norwich, helping to make Robinsons soft drinks. Not only was the  experience a welcome boost to my ailing bank balance, it was also a good induction into the camaraderie that factory life can sometimes create – we worked hard on admittedly boring tasks, but shared a lot of fun doing it, and I made many long-lasting friends as a result. So I was fascinated to read the stories of Eileen and Ann, who met 69 years ago at the Yardley factory in east London, and what happened when they met up again after so long. When we concentrate we’re trying to focus attention on one particular topic or activity. It’s one of the brain functions that will deteriorate rapidly when you are unwell or stressed. Concentration is affected by your physical state, so will fail as you become tired during the day, or if you are distracted by sensations such as pain, hunger or nausea.
