At the end of our small but perfectly formed garden is our shed/garage. It’s the ideal hideaway for my husband when our female-dominated household becomes too much for him. It’s currently home to his adored mountain bike, a pile of dusty gym equipment and a sizeable family of spiders. But since I saw the shed on page 40 in this week’s issue, I’m consumed by envy. All I can think about now is how I can clear out all the junk to create a lovely peaceful haven for me instead. So, little by little, the clutter is going to disappear from our shed this summer. The fact was, I just couldn’t say no to Mrs Amber, despite in the past having said far worse to her. I recognised her the minute she strolled into my café even though it had been 30 years. This stylish Art Deco powder compact was made in France in the 1920s. The exterior is covered in matt black enamel and decorated with carved jade, with tiny diamonds to each side. The clip at the front opens the compact to reveal a solid 18ct gold interior with a covered compartment for powder and a mirror in the lid. An item of quality and in perfect condition, it has an auction estimate of £800-£1,200.  This Victorian jewellery box was made in walnut in around 1870. Months of hard work on the allotment is already paying off for Karen Warren. When I was 15, my mother received an enormous phone bill. She was a full-time primary schoolteacher and a single parent. The bill was horrendous. It was 1980 and it was into the £100s. Persistently high blood levels of cholesterol can stick to the walls of your arteries, causing fatty plaques that harden, making the arteries stiff and narrow – atherosclerosis. Eventually a blockage occurs, stopping blood flowing to the relevant tissue. In the arteries to the heart this can cause a heart attack, where areas of heart muscle don’t get any blood and die. The heart then fails as a pump. In the brain, plaques block the blood flow to brain tissue (a stroke), and the effects will depend on which bit of the brain has been injured.
