They say that travel broadens the mind and before I had my daughters (now aged seven and 10), I would visit three different countries every year in my bid to see the world. My hay fever started in childhood and every year it begins in spring and lasts through summer and autumn. It’s triggered by cut grass, pollen and seeds. I only have to sit near a window when someone is cutting the grass and my eyes start to itch and stream. I also sneeze, get a sore throat and I feel generally miserable. These Victorian silver scissors were made in Sheffield in 1874 by John Gammage, specifically for cutting grapes from a bunch. They are in pristine condition having been little used, and are still housed in their original silk-lined case. The handles are decorated to simulate intertwining serpents, and they would make as good a gift today as they did over a century ago. Their value? £100.
