Reading the stories behind the WW team’s favourite perfume choices (page 22, see left for mine) made me think. Smells are such potent things, aren’t they? They have the power to evoke memories, trigger emotions and communicate messages. For example, the smell of Old Spice always reminds me of my late father. It was the only aftershave he ever wore. And if I ever catch a whiff of candyfloss, it immediately transports me back to my childhood summers spent at my grandparents’ home by the sea in Broadstairs and the funfair that was our favourite outing. Lynn Terry has always been a dog lover. Over the years, she’s amassed a large collection of photos of canines and humans together, which adorn the walls of her home. Lynn also had a dog of her own, a pit bull/cattle dog cross called DeeDee, whom she had rescued after her owner abandoned her in the rain. In 2006, Lynn began her photo booth series of dogs for a local pit bull rescue group. One picture of two dogs – such good friends that Lynn didn’t need to use any of the tricks she’d learnt over the years of pet photography to get them to respond to each other – went so well she began experimenting with different backdrops and dogs. I’ve had pain most of my adult life – spreading progressively over the years to all of my joints from the top of my head to my toes and fingertips. Dear Keren I'm concerned about my son. He is 40 years old and his last three relationships haven’t worked as he wished. Where I went Malton, Yorkshire’s food capital. I’ve been making the Christmas pilgrimage to the York markets for as long as I can remember, but had never struck out into the green and rambling expanse of countryside to the north-east of the city until now. Heaven Scent Photographing this bottle of my favourite perfume, I realise it's almost empty. Oops! We all know that good nutrition, relaxation and regular exercise lead to good health, but now it seems that we can also add creativity to that list. A growing body of scientific research is showing that expressing ourselves creatively – through dance, music, art, or poetry – can be a powerful way to boost wellbeing, from reducing depression and calming anxiety to strengthening the cardiovascular system and easing joint pain.
