Last summer I started having stress-induced insomnia. I knew what was causing it. I’d been asked to do a presentation at work and it took me completely out of my comfort zone. I’d written the presentation weeks in advance but I started getting wound up and anxious. I’d wake most nights because I’d dreamed about it. I was so pleased to read Patricia’s letter to Keren and find that there is at least one other 62-year-old who has trouble finding motivation to exercise. One’s 60s can be an awkward age – still comparatively fit, but finding that things one used to be able to do easily, are now harder, and with the post-menopause ‘spare tyre’ creeping up. I too gave up on going to the gym. I am not greatly self-motivated, so it was easy to slip away from the big classes where I injured myself trying too hard. Hopes for cutting cervical cancer Human papilloma virus (HPV) infection has fallen by four-fifths in young English women since vaccination was introduced for teenage girls 10 years ago. Opioids (sometimes called ‘opiates’) are natural or synthetic drugs related to the opium poppy. They include our strongest painkillers, including morphine, heroin, fentanyl, oxycodone and pethidine, and weaker or less active forms, such as codeine, buprenorphine and tramadol. They’re legally only available on prescription in the UK (apart from the weakest codeine) but they’re increasingly being misused, despite their dangers (especially when mixed with tranquillisers). Opioids have powerful effects on mood, can be addictive and may have severe side-effects. A lot of young mothers have recently moved into the neighbourhood. I don’t know why – perhaps the council has been running some sort of special offer to keep the schools and nurseries in business. Anyway, a number of these young mums have joined our book club, which means that some of the older members have had their noses put out of joint.
