I loved Caroline Buchanan’s article on handbag clutter (17 April), and immediately felt compelled to declutter my own. But, somehow, I didn’t get very far. Aside from the odd dirty tissue and a few receipts, most of the ‘junk’ in there actually means something to me, and I was reluctant to leave it out. Being reliant on public transport means that some items are necessary for ‘killing time’, such as book, a quick snack or the latest WW . Other items are essential, such as my purse, mobile and reading glasses. I got to thinking that in a way my handbag is my ‘home’ in minuscule form, giving me a sense of security. Sorry, Caroline. Eating too much red and processed meat is linked to an increased risk of bowel cancer. Red meat includes beef, lamb (and mutton), pork, veal, venison and goat. Processed meat has been preserved by smoking, curing, salting or adding preservatives and includes sausages, bacon, ham, salami and luncheon meats (including those made from chicken and turkey), pâtés and canned meats. Red meat is a good source of protein, vitamins and minerals but try to eat no more than 500g a week. Cut down by eating smaller portions, less often and using alternatives. Mary Leigh lost confidence and independence when she was first diagnosed with a genetically inherited illness, retinitis pigmentosa, which leads to sight loss. But since being partnered with her guide dog Chelsea, she now feels safe in any situation. ‘I was a trained nurse who was used to a hectic life, so being diagnosed with my condition in 1990 came as a terrible shock. A man with a clipboard came into the charity shop on Monday and demanded to see the manager. It’s the first time this has ever happened in my many years behind the counter. People simply don’t march into charity shops demanding to see managers. Perhaps we’ve just been lucky, and other shops are beating people away with a broom. I somehow doubt it, though, especially in the small, independent shops. We could probably run a racket in stolen goods, laughing an evil laugh and twirling imaginary moustaches as we did so, and people would still say, ‘Fair enough, it’s for charity’. Chocolate Mini Cones Using store-bought custard is a quick ice-cream trick, which gives you time to make your own designer cones! European regulators have acted to reduce foetal damage caused by taking the drug valproate during pregnancy. They say the drug should only be used in pregnancy when nothing else will work, and should not be used at all to treat migraine or bipolar disorder in pregnancy. They also say women or girls who may get pregnant should be fully warned about the need to avoid this while taking valproate, with new packaging to emphasise the risks.
