NAILSEA GLASS Nailsea glassworks near Bristol was founded in 1788 and closed in 1873 – and made mainly bottles and glass for windows, but also coloured glass items. Nailsea became the generic term for coloured glass novelties known as ‘friggers’ or ‘end of day’ pieces, as they were made with the residue of molten glass left over after the day’s production. Yet Pat Clarke is now entering her 14th year at HMP The Mount in Hertfordshire, a category C prison with around 1,000 prisoners – and it’s provided her with the most rewarding work of her career.
