When we meet Arlene Phillips, CBE, the grande dame of dance, choreography and the killer put-down, it’s amazing to know that she has just celebrated her 74th birthday.
After all, dressed as she is today in navy culottes, coupled with a Chanel-style jacket, and her hair pinned in a chignon, she looks decades younger than her birth certificate would suggest. ‘Thank you,’ she says, ‘I don’t feel my age either.’
It helps, perhaps, that, ever the dancer, she remains so physically active. Before our interview, she’s had a swim and been on her exercise bike; a morning ritual that, she says, helps her to stay youthful, energised and slim.
