They visited recently and during their stay our grandson said he felt unwell while out, so our son-in-law took him back to our house, insisting our daughter went home with us so he could have a ‘man-to-man talk’ with our grandson. He’d been making jibes about him being adolescent, being full of testosterone and having friends who are girls. He works as a gardener. He calls his son his mate and sides with him against our daughter, who seems to believe everything he tells her. People who work in shops have a terrible secret from the outside world. It is something we rarely admit, but that everybody knows. You didn’t hear this from me, but here it is: sometimes working in a shop isn’t very exciting. We meet all sorts of people, it’s true, and there is a certain job satisfaction in seeing a happy customer leave the shop with, say, the second-hand tweed skirt they’ve always wanted. But sometimes there are hours with nothing to do. At least, it seems like hours. Wednesday was one of those days. I was in the shop on my own. Ben, one of our volunteers, had called in sick.
