As so often happens, the content of this issue prompted all kinds of conversations among the WW team. Unexpectedly, though, the one that gave rise to the most animated discussion was the feature on page 18. Where I went This picturesque village sits in the Kent countryside. Its main attraction is Penshurst Place, a beautiful stately home built in 1341, once home to Sir Philip Sidney, poet, soldier, scholar and courtier in the reign of Elizabeth I. Portrait Miniatures Imagine a time before photography, when your only image of a loved one would be painted by hand. These precious items were especially popular among people of means. They were intended to be worn on the person, table mounted or carried about when travelling, often in delightful leather-bound cases with plush silk velvet interiors – like the one pictured here (right), which sold for £400 at auction. Barbecue Drumsticks With Wedges FOR THE WEDGES: 1 Heat the oven to 200°C or Gas Mark 6. Tip the barbecue sauce into a large roasting tin. Stir in the malt vinegar, 2tbsp water, the onion and garlic. 2 Tip in the chicken drumsticks and pierce each one several times with a knife. Season the chicken with salt and pepper and turn in the barbecue sauce to coat. 3 Put the potatoes into another roasting tin. So much so that I decided to embark on my own waste not want not project to create a Christmas decoration for the front window of my house.
