It’s 1972 in Richmond, Virginia. HONEY-MAE BUSH, a black girl, spends most of her days at Pine Hill High School. She walks there with her sister, MARY-GRACE. Their white neighbour, KIP DEVINE, always walks with them. ROSE DEVINE, Kip’s mother, feels old at 35. Her long-gone husband turned out to be a womaniser, and now her daughter, WREN, is showing signs of racism. Then one day, Mary-Grace goes missing.
