It’s 1972 in Richmond, Virginia, a time of racial tension. HONEY-MAE BUSH, a black girl, spends most of her days at Pine Hill High School. She walks there with her sister, MARY-GRACE. KIP DEVINE, their white neighbour, always walks with them, slipping his hand into Honey-Mae’s as they go up the school steps. ROSE DEVINE, Kip’s mother, feels old and sad at 35. Her long-gone husband, CLAY, turned out to be a womaniser, and now her daughter, WREN, is showing signs of being racist. Meanwhile, Honey-Mae has known for a while that her sister secretly meets someone each Friday. One particular Friday, Mary-Grace goes missing. The story now continues
