The Truth About Ivory Ivory has long been used as a medium for everything from furniture to jewellery. But as it becomes harder to obtain, values have been steadily rising. However, in the modern world, we rightly want to stamp out the killing of elephants by poachers for ivory, so we now have rigorous prevention laws – meaning that when it comes to selecting or selling, ivory must be approached with extreme caution. In general terms, the law bans sales of all ivory, of any age, unless it has been ‘worked’ into an ornament. For example, a plain African elephant tusk cannot be sold legally, even if it is centuries old. Not only has the rose been the national flower of England since Tudor times, but many new varieties have been produced to commemorate key events over our current Queen’s 63-year reign. Red, white and blue is the obvious theme for a floral tribute to mark the Queen becoming the longest-reigning British monarch, but mixing roses with peonies, lavender, lilies and geraniums in pastel pink, lavender-blue and white is much more subtle. Egg-Cup Pin Cushion Cut a 14cm-diameter circle of fabric. Sew a gathering stitch around the edge and start to pull up the gathers. Fill the circle with toy filling. Pull up the gathers tightly and fasten the thread securely. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to glue the pin cushion in an egg cup with strong epoxy resin glue. Donated organs, tissue, blood and stem cells have saved or transformed millions of lives since the first-ever kidney transplant in 1950. Demand is increasing, thanks to medical advances and population changes, and around 7,000 people are on the UK transplant waiting list. Yet fewer than 60% of us have signed up to be organ donors, while 96% of us rely on the other 4% to donate blood. I first thought about using homeopathy in dentistry when I was nearing the end of my time serving as an army dentist. Even though I was initially sceptical, I believed that I had a responsibility to have at least a basic understanding and an open mind about the healthcare choices some of my patients were making.
