Q Why have I got skin tags? And what can I do about them?
A Skin tags are soft growths, up to 5cm wide, affecting both sexes, found where there’s chafing, on the neck (from necklaces), the eyelids or skin folds. They resemble warts, but are smooth, knobbly and aren’t contagious (warts are rougher, flatter, spreading easily).
Comprising collagen fibres and blood vessels, often affecting older or overweight people, or with type 2 diabetes, there may be no obvious cause.
They are harmless, rarely uncomfortable, but you may consider removal if unsightly, snagging on clothing or they bleed. Surgical removal is only available privately, not on the NHS.
