When we hear the words ‘honour-based’ abuse, it’s important to remember that there is no honour in it at all. The term refers to crimes carried out in order to prevent shame being brought upon a family, and to protect their – so-called – honour. Tragically, the number of reported offences has risen in England by more than 60% in the past two years. According to police data, there were 1,599 incidents (including death, rape, forced marriage and assault) reported in 2020, and in 2022, there were more than 2,500. The cause of the increase cannot be determined and it may partially be due to more victims speaking out. Whatever the reasons, the figures are worrying.
